Our History.....
In the 1900's in the town of Chemung, a series of out of control fires prompted five local businessmen to take action. On January 8, 1930, the first meeting of what would eventually become the Chemung Board of Fire Commissioners was held. On September 26, 1930, an alarm sounded to signal the first fire drill for the newly formed fire company.
Around this time the first fire truck, a Model T, was purchased. In 1933, the Model T was sold and replaced with a Chevrolet truck, while in '36, Chemung Fire saw the installation of their first telephone.
World War 2 saw changes for the Chemung Fire Company. As membership declined due to members going overseas to serve their company, the remaining members helped with air raid drills, scrap collections, blackout patrols, and additional fire training. As WW2 neared its end, preparations were made for the purchase of a new fire truck, an International.
The 1950's saw significant growth for Chemung. In 1953, a fire police classification is added to the fire company duty list, and the purchase of a search and rescue outboard motor boat. Two years later, the Fire Station was purchased, and in '57, plectrons (tone alerting devices) are placed in some firefighter's home, and a Blitz Buggy fire truck is purchased.
